Life Legacy


Emma Lane Harrell Carter, 70, formerly of Beloit, Wisconsin, and a resident of Fairview Nursing Plaza in Rockford, died Monday, January 11, 2010 at St. Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, Illinois.

She was born October 18, 1939 in Pontotoc, Mississippi, the daughter of William and Anna (Cobb) Harrell. At the age of five, Emma moved to Beloit, Wisconsin with her family. She attended Beloit public schools and graduated from Beloit Memorial High School in 1957, and continued her education at Madison Area Technical College and received her degree in Licensed Practical Nursing in 1959. Emma worked at Beloit Memorial Hospital and later at Evanston Northwestern Hospital. In October 1962, Emma married Robert L. Carter and the couple set up residency in Evanston, Illinois. Emma and Robert returned to Beloit in 1969 with three of their four children, two sons and a daughter and welcomed their fourth child, another daughter, in 1970. She was a member of New Zion Baptist Church in Beloit.

Those who knew Emma marveled at her gift of culinary arts. One longtime family friend said, “The first gourmet meal I had as a teenager was prepared by Emma and was it delicious”! Emma cooked for her family, friends and the neighborhood community.

Emma was predeceased by her parents and one brother. She will be missed greatly by her family members, two sons, Robert Carter of Brodhead, WI, and William (Lori) Carter of Madison, WI, two daughters, Joyce Carter-Hilts of Janesville, WI, and Valerie (William) Carter-Brown of Waukegan, IL, two brothers, George (Maline) Harrell of Dodgeville, WI and Jessie (Doris) Harrell of Beloit, two sisters, Betty Barnett of Milwaukee, WI, and Dorothy Harrell of Washington, DC, four grandchildren, Britney Chamble, Kendall “Chubbs” Hilts, Stacy Broach, and William Carter II, a great grandchild, Sanaai Broach, along with a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Memorial donations may be made to the New Zion Baptist Church Mission Society.

Funeral services are 12:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at Hansen-Gravitt Funeral Home in Beloit with visitation begining at 11:00 a.m. Committal in Eastlawn Cemetery will follow the funeral service. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.hansengravitt.com.
