Harold Wilson Sowl, 95, of Beloit, Wisconsin, died, Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at Premier Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing in Beloit.
Harold was born on September 19, 1914 in Argyle, Wisconsin the son of William and Gena (Johnson) Sowl. He married the former Neva Frederick Roe on October 7, 1944 in Van Buren, Arkansas, she preceded him in death on May 14, 2001. Harold attended Argyle and Beloit public schools and graduated from Beloit Vocational School. He served in the Coast Guard Auxiliary and the United States Army 663rd Artillery Unit during World War II. Following the war Harold was employed at Kenny Shoe Store in Fort Smith, Arkansas and was later transferred to Lubbock, Texas as an assistant store manager. Upon moving back to Beloit Harold was employed at the Beloit Iron Works and Beloit Corporation in the sub-assembly department, retiring after more than thirty years of employment.
Harold was a member of First United Methodist Church in Beloit, Machinist’s I.A.M. & Aerospace Workers Local 1197 where he served as Treasurer for fifteen years, member, former Treasurer and Jr. Governor of the Loyal Order of Moose Legion 191 in Beloit, the Beloit Area Chapter of Credit Union’s where served as a Past President and Treasurer, the West-Field American Legion Post 48 serving as it’s Vice-Commander and three time Post Commander, Past Commanders Club of Wisconsin, life member in Le Chefs de Gare Passe Club, La Societe des Forty et Eight, and charter member of the National Past Chef de Gare Club. Harold was a past Vice-President and President of the B.I.W. and First Of America Credit Union in Beloit serving on the Board of Directors for twenty-two years. He served as Notary Public for Governors Nelson, Reynolds, and Lucy, and served as Chairman of The Neighborhood Watch Program. Harold was Grand Marshall of the Beloit Memorial Day Parade several times and served on the parade committee for many years. Even though Harold had no children of his own he loved spending time with the children of his friends and family.
Harold is survived by his six nieces, Sonia Wright, Patricia Stuebe, Marlene Olson, Lucy Hueber, Mary Suits, and Mary Lou Neal, three nephews, Howard, David, and William Sowl, several grand nieces and nephews, special friends, Aaron and Nancy Austin, Jeana Milner, and Betty Shear, and his special sweet hearts, Aidan and Allison. He was preceded in death by his six brothers, Carson, Ralph, William, Howard, Harry, and Robert Sowl, three nieces, Carol, Marcia, and Gloria, and two nephews, Clayton, and Ole.

Funeral services are 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 2, 2010 at Hansen-Gravitt Funeral Home in Beloit with the Reverend Dawn Ramsdale of River Of Life United Methodist Church officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Floral Lawn Cemetery, South Beloit, IL with military honors by the West-Field American Legion Post 48 of Beloit. Memorial donations may be made to the West-Field American Legion.
